“The Post,” Dan Ellsberg and Secrecy

March 13, 2018 — After spending seven months in London I find myself chasing down soon to go away, worthy films at various sexvigintuplexes the size of aircraft carriers. Thus, I finally got to see The Post on a big screen in LA before it went to wherever movies go when their run is over.  Lady Bird and The Florida Project got away. Netflix.

Watching The Post was a nostalgic trip to another lifetime when confusion and chaos reigned like they do now – film at eleven. I spent many years off and on in Washington, DC and was there for the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg turning himself into authorities and the Watergate break-in.

Some believe Dan to be a traitor, some a national hero. Not surprisingly I am of the latter persuasion. As for the Washington Post and the New York Times, I was so proud. There was the Fourth Estate doing exactly what it had to do to keep alive a democratic republic.  Democracies of every type cannot survive without a free press. History has shown this over and over again.

The decline of America as a moral center for the Western world began in 1964. It was couched in the words of a resolution quickly drafted, shoved before the United States Congress on August 9 and passed after eight hours of debate 416-0 (House) and 88-2 (Senate). It was about events in the Gulf of Tonkin and it was a lie. Worse, it was an institutional lie.

Seven years later Daniel Ellsberg and his supporters copied and delivered the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times and the Washington Post.  What shocked many back then, but would hardly raise an eyebrow now? The government’s accounts of the Vietnam War were riddled with lies.

The institutional lying about the Vietnam War was a moral catastrophe for the United States. Millions of innocents died and trillions of (2018) dollars were wasted. Whatever prospect America had of recovering from that evaporated on March 20, 2003 when more institutional lying began a series of wars with seemingly no end. America had declared war on a improper noun.

It is notable the Pentagon Papers were formally declassified on May 4, 2011. While we wait for the declassification of the “Iraq War Papers,” “declassification by other means” has taken place as part of a nascent Internet based revolution.

The tragedy of institutional lying is that it metastasizes to the general public and lying becomes so endemic, when the truth does show up, it is not recognized.

And so it is that fifty-four years after the passing of that infamous resolution the most powerful nation/state/empire/kingdom the world has ever seen has reached a new nadir of moral authority.

Down though the past decades another lie traveled as companion to this decline. It was not about war, not directly. It was and is about the “greatest story never told.” The human race is not alone is this vast universe and its fellow travelers are not microbes on some distant planet a million light years away. Rather they are sentient beings in our airspace and in our bedrooms – now.

Through all the post-WWII wars of the 20th and 21st Century members of the military/intelligence communities of nations have carried the burden of knowing this truth. It is time for these national security warriors to share this burden with the rest of us. We can handle it. We have the right to carry it.

As I sat in the theater watching The Post being reminded of the pain of those times, I was comforted by the knowledge that two great papers are once again rising to answer the call and be the Fourth Estate the nation needs. Will the greatest truth of all be the way back for America? Will an American president be the first to deliver that truth to the people of this world?

Checkpoint ‘Oh my gosh, dude’: Video shows Navy pilot’s close encounter with an unidentified fast-flying object

For the third time in three months, a declassified Defense Department video shows U.S. Navy F-18 fighters seemingly encountering UFOs.

“Oh my gosh, dude,” said one pilot in the video of their F/A-18 Super Hornet military jet’s 2015 encounter with the unusual object along the East Coast. The oval-shaped aircraft zipped with befuddling speed.

“Wow! What is that, man?” said another. “Look at that flying!”

The 35-second video, released by the privately owned media and scientific research company To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science, is the latest to suggest the existence of hovering egg-shaped vessels since the Pentagon in December publicly acknowledged a program dedicated to the study of unidentified flying objects. While the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program ran from 2007 to 2012, those familiar with it say efforts are still made to further learn about these objects.

News of the mystery program and the first two declassified videos of the strange objects introduced the possibility of extraterrestrial aircraft for the first time since the Air Force’s Project Blue Book, records cataloguing more than 12,000 UFO sightings between 1947 and 1969, when the program was shut down. The program was unable to find “any technological developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific knowledge,” and “no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as ‘unidentified’ are extraterrestrial vehicles,” according to the Air Force….

The military keeps encountering UFOs. Why doesn’t the Pentagon care?

In December, the Defense Department declassified two videos documenting encounters between U.S. Navy F-18 fighters and unidentified aircraft. The first video captures multiple pilots observing and discussing a strange, hovering, egg-shaped craft, apparently one of a “fleet” of such objects, according to cockpit audio. The second shows a similar incident involving an F-18 attached to the USS Nimitz carrier battle group in 2004.

The videos, along with observations by pilots and radar operators, appear to provide evidence of the existence of aircraft far superior to anything possessed by the United States or its allies. Defense Department officials who analyze the relevant intelligence confirm more than a dozen such incidents off the East Coast alone since 2015. In another recent case, the Air Force launched F-15 fighters last October in a failed attempt to intercept an unidentified high-speed aircraft looping over the Pacific Northwest .

A third declassified video, released by To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science , a privately owned media and scientific research company to which I’m an adviser, reveals a previously undisclosed Navy encounter that occurred off the East Coast in 2015…….

Government Documents Reveal Canada Took UFOs Seriously

March 7, 2018
VICE
Mack Lamoureux

A collection of documents from 1967 found in the national archives give us a hint into just how seriously the government used to take UFO sightings.

The documents outline how the government investigated UFOs—a process that most likely lasted for years afterwards—and breaks down six cases that are “of interest” to the government in detail. The investigations include a man burned by a UFO in Manitoba, some incredibly weird radar sightings by the Department of Defence, an RCMP officer in Nova Scotia who watched a UFO dive below the water and disappear, and a crop circle found in Alberta that was the first investigated by a government.

The documents were found in the national archive by Chris Rutkowski—a man that could probably be best described as Canada’s Fox Mulder—and recently posted to his Ufology blog. Rutowski routinely goes through Canada’s national archives looking for things like this and described the find as “a gem.”

“What we do have in here is rather interesting reports from qualified personnel and qualified sources and investigated by qualified investigators and still there is no explanation,” Rutkowski told VICE. “What that tells me is that the UFO phenomena was taking quite seriously by them indeed.”…….

Of Space Aliens and the Catholic Faith

February 23, 2018
National Catholic Register
Sabrina Arena Ferrisi

On Dec. 16, 2017, reports were released by the U.S. Department of Defense of a possible UFO-sighting 13 years earlier. Apparently, in mid-November 2004, two American fighter pilots spotted and filmed an unidentified flying object off the coast of San Diego. The object they saw was about 40 feet long and looked like a giant Tic-Tac. It appeared suddenly at 80,000 feet, then descended toward the ocean and hovered at 20,000 feet, before dropping out of radar range.

There is no explanation for what these two fighter pilots saw and filmed. But the Church has plenty to say, theologically, about the possibility of life in outer space.

“There is no official teaching,” said Father Terry Ehrman, assistant director for the Center for Theology, Science and Human Flourishing at the University of Notre Dame. “But there has been speculation within the Church since the Middle Ages. In the 15th century, people began to ask if there was a plurality of worlds.”

Since 1582, the Vatican has had — with some continuity — an astronomical observatory. With regards to the subject of alien life, it held conferences on this matter in 2009, 2011 and 2014….

Is Humanity Ready for the Discovery of Alien Life?

February 16, 2018
Scientific American
Yasemin Saplakoglu

When ‘Oumuamua, a mysterious interstellar object, swept through our solar system last October, it elicited breathless news stories all asking the obvious question—is it a spaceship? There were no signs it was—although many people seemed to hope otherwise.

Throughout history most strange new cosmic phenomena have made us wonder: Could this be it, the moment we first face alien life? The expectation isn’t necessarily outlandish—many scientists can and do make elaborate, evidence-based arguments that we will eventually discover life beyond the bounds of our planet. To true believers, what may be more uncertain is whether or not such news would cause global panic—which depends on how our minds, so greatly influenced by our Earthly environment and society, would perceive the potential threat of something utterly outside our familiar context……..

‘DISCLOSURE’ Is Vladimir Putin set to announce to the world that aliens are here on Earth?

February 9, 2018
Daily Express (UK)
Jon Austin

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin could be the man to make world history by announcing intelligent aliens exist and have visited Earth, a conspiracy theorist has claimed after spending a week in Moscow calling on the Kremlin to acknowledge extraterrestrials.

The Paradigm Research Group (PRG) based in the US believes an unproven conspiracy theory that world powers are concealing a massive secret that intelligent aliens regularly visit Earth and work with governments under top-secret projects.

Steve Bassett, PRG founder, is the only registered lobbyist in the US on the issue of so-called alien disclosure.

However, he does not believe Donald Trump is the man to tell the world the truth and headed to Russia to try to push for Mr Putin to take the lead.

US citizen, Mr Bassett, spent a week in Russia trying to convince Mr Putin of the importance of lifting an alleged “truth embargo” that he claims stops world leaders telling the public the truth about aliens.
